Residential Snow Removal in Saskatoon

Saskatoon averages around a hundred centimetres of snow a year, and almost none of it melts between storms. What falls in November is still there in March, stacked into whatever bank you pushed it onto four storms ago. That is the actual problem with clearing a driveway here. It is not one big snowfall, it is the accumulation, and running out of room to put it by January is what turns a manageable job into a bad one.

What Gets Cleared

A standard residential plan covers the driveway, the walk from the door to the driveway, and the public sidewalk across the front of the property. That last one matters more than people expect. Under the City of Saskatoon sidewalk bylaw the property owner is responsible for clearing the public walk in front of their home, not the City, and the timeline is short after a snowfall ends.

Back lanes, detached garage pads, and parking spurs get added where the property has them. A Nutana lot with a rear garage off the lane is a different route stop than a front-drive bungalow in Lakeview, and it should be quoted that way.

Where We Put It

Snow storage is the part nobody asks about in October and everybody asks about in February. On a narrow lot with a short driveway there is a limited amount of space along the edges before banks start eating the width of the driveway itself and blocking sightlines backing out.

We plan the stacking direction at the first clearing of the season, working the snow toward the low-value corner of the yard and away from the approach. On properties where the banks genuinely run out of room, hauling it off site is the fix, and we would rather tell you in advance than push snow into a pile that becomes a problem in the new year.

Timing

Route customers get cleared overnight and through the early morning. The goal is a driveway that is open before anyone needs to leave for work, not a crew that shows up at two in the afternoon once the day is already lost.

Storms that run long get a second pass after the snow stops. So does the city windrow, that dense packed ridge the municipal plow leaves across the bottom of every driveway on the block, which arrives on its own schedule and sets like concrete if it sits overnight.

Sand, Salt, and What Actually Works Here

Salt is a chemical reaction, and the reaction slows down as the temperature drops. Standard road salt is doing very little once you are past about minus fifteen, and a Saskatoon cold snap sits well below that for days at a time.

That is why our residential plans carry sand and grit through the deep-cold weeks. Sand does not melt anything. It sits on top and gives boots and tires something to grip, which is the part you actually need on a front step at minus twenty-eight. When temperatures come back up, salt starts earning its place again on the walkways where it will not damage newer concrete.
