Skimming the top and leaving a packed base under it is how a driveway becomes an ice rink by mid-January. Each pass compresses what is left, sun softens the top of it in the afternoon, and it refreezes overnight into something no shovel is getting up.
We clear to the pavement on the first pass wherever the surface allows it. On concrete and asphalt that means down to the hard surface. On gravel the blade has to ride above the loose material, so a thin compacted layer stays behind and gets managed with grit rather than scraped.
The Windrow
Municipal graders clear residential streets on their own schedule, which is rarely the same schedule as the storm. The ridge they leave across the driveway approach is heavier than the snow that fell, because it has been rolled, pushed, and mixed with whatever was already on the road.
Left overnight it hardens into a bank you need a machine to break. Handled on a return pass while it is still workable, it is a couple of minutes. Seasonal customers get that pass automatically.
Where the Snow Goes
The first clearing of the season sets the pattern for the rest of it. Push everything to the nearest edge in November and by February the banks have narrowed the usable driveway by a metre on each side, buried the walk, and blocked the sightline for backing onto the street.
We pick the stacking direction based on the yard rather than the shortest push, keeping snow off the approach corners and away from anywhere it will run back across the driveway when it melts. On lots that genuinely run out of storage, snow hauling removes the banks rather than rearranging them.
Different Driveways, Different Jobs
A straight front drive on a newer Evergreen lot and a back-lane garage pad in Sutherland are not the same stop. The lane job depends on the City clearing the lane itself, has tighter turning room, and often shares access with the neighbours.

Can I book one storm instead of the whole season?
Yes. Single storms are available, with the caveat that route customers are cleared first, so a one-off call after a heavy overnight snowfall will be later in the day rather than before the commute.
My driveway is gravel. Does that change anything?
It does. Gravel cannot be scraped to the surface without dragging the surface off with it, so the blade rides higher and leaves a thin compacted layer behind. That layer is normal on a gravel drive and it is why acreage and rural jobs sit differently than a city pad.
How much room do you need to stack the snow?
Less than most people expect at the start of the season and more than they expect by February. We look at the yard, pick the side that costs you the least, and start there. Narrow lots sometimes hit a point where hauling is the only honest answer.
Do you clear around parked vehicles?
