Where the City Stops and We Start

Martensville blades all streets to the side as soon as snowfall stops, working a priority system based on traffic and safety: arterial and collector streets first, then school areas, then residential streets, then lanes serving multiple-unit dwellings. Remaining lanes get done as equipment frees up. Intersections are sanded as required. Sidewalks along Centennial Drive and Main Street are cleared once blading is finished.

Actual snow removal, as opposed to blading it aside, begins only after the entire city has been bladed. When that happens the City posts the affected area at least 24 hours beforehand, and vehicles obstructing the work are ticketed and towed.

Most of the residential expansion happened after 2000, with a particularly sharp stretch after 2006. Newer subdivisions like Lake Vista were built under modern planning standards, and Trilogy Ranch is planned at 680 acres with 600 of those residential.

Established areas like Glenwood Terrace are cul-de-sac neighbourhoods carrying mostly local traffic. A cul-de-sac is its own small problem in a snow route, since equipment has to enter, work in a bulb with limited room, and back out, and the snow taken off it has fewer places to go.

Eight Kilometres, Not Twenty

Martensville sits roughly 8 km from Saskatoon, against Warman’s 20 km, which makes it the tightest commuter link of the satellite cities.

A shorter commute means a later departure and a narrower window between when the storm stops and when people need to leave. Route customers here are cleared overnight for the same reason as everywhere else, but the timing is less forgiving.
